Nordic people from all aspects of life, their careers and lives. Over and above serving a common interest in things European or Scandinavian, Nordic Reach Magazine covers the latest in areas that truly change the world as we know it.

Immigrant chefs arrive with exotic cooking habits, and will change the way we eat, as surely as they themselves are changed. Food from Scandinavia, and its creators are winning the palates of finicky metropolitans: Six of the New York-based Scandinavian chefs photographed by Henrik Olund for our issue 14. Ari Nieminen, of Water's Edge, originally from the Tampere area;
Jane Press of Flatotel originally from Odense and Copenhagen; Johan Svensson of Riingo, originally from Torso; Morten Sohlberg, of Smorgaschef originally from Oslo; Nils Noren of Aquavit originally from Stockholm and Gavle; Petra Hauff, Cake Maker originally from Kungsangen, Stockholm.

Marcus Samuelsson of Restaurant Aquavit. New York's Aquavit, founded in the mid-1980s by, and run by, Swedish gastronomer.. restaurateur Hakan Swahn, has long had a reputation for offering the best of Nordic cuisines. The restaurant’s Executive chef Marcus Samuelsson was photographed for issue 14 by Henrik Olund. The star chef combines a solid knowledge of Swedish traditional food with influences from Asia, Africa and other parts of the world. Samuelsson, Swedish cuisine’s bright star in America, may be only 35, but he's already been around the block a few times. Whether in or out of the kitchen, the master chef sees himself as a creative thinker first and foremost.

Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the past twelve years, is widely credited with giving his adopted Californian city a prominent place on the international map of classical music. The orchestra he leads is currently enjoying its new home in the sophisticated new Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by Frank Gehry. Unlike most of his conducting contemporaries, Salonen is also a highly regarded and prolific composer, writing for both orchestras and ensembles; two of his notable compositions are L.A. Variations and the powerful work, Insomnia. He has played a major role in encouraging young Finnish composers and introducing music by Nordic composers to Americans.
Scandinavian editor David Bartal, himself a native of Los Angeles, caught up with Salonen for our issue 10.

On History and Heroes
A Conversation with Göran Persson

Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson
, recipient of the 2001 Raoul Wallenberg Award for his many humanitarian accomplishments, speaks out in an exclusive interview to Nordic Reach Publisher and Editor Ulf Mårtensson. "America does not stand alone. These people are murderers. It is obvious that the terrorists are not interested in a dialogue...they lack political motives. All democracies stand side by side in the fight against terrorism. The United Nations resolution unites all democracies. The international open society is powerful and America has a right to use military force in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks - not just a right; it is also its responsibility to the rest of the free world."
