distans.gifScandinavian art in all its expressions is regularly featured in Nordic Reach Magazine - be it Nordic film and music, a Scandinavian director or actor, a Scandinavian painter, sculptor or performer. Trends and faces, where to get them, to find them, to go.

A group of New York based artists. Photographed in Sol Kjøk's Greenpoint, Brooklyn studio in September, 2005. Shot exclusively for Nordic Reach by photographer Henrik Olund, www.henrikolund.com
The New York art scene has always been invigorated by the fresh ideas of newcomers from the other side of the Atlantic. Transplanted Scandinavian artists who settle in the Big Apple thrive in NYC - the most cosmopolitan city in the world - a few were covered in a recent issue of the magazine.

Pernilla August, featured in issue 6, photographed by Bo Zaunders. In the United States, August may be best known for her portrayal of Shmi Skywalker, the mother of Anakin/Darth Vader in "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace". But she is better known to Scandinavians as one of Ingmar Bergman's Muses.
"He creates an atmosphere of trust", said August about Bergman. "He makes you feel comfortable with your own interpretations of a role". she said. "You trust your feelings and search your inner self to find the right way to express an attitude, a course of events, a process..."
August has joked that should she be typecast in the future, the available roles would be rather limited: Both of her international productions have featured her as virgin mothers: Star Wars character Shmi Skywalker and a leading role as Mary of Nazareth in a film shot in Budapest, with Christian Bale.
As for future dream roles, "There might be a couple of Chekhov's ladies I would still like to play in the theater, but right now, I would like to do more movies. The work on stage tends to be strenuous."

Maya Lin, featured in issue 10; one of America's best-known artists and architects - the woman who designed the widely acclaimed Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. - completed her first major work outside of the United States. Maya Lin's new monumental work is located in Wanas, an arts foundation in the south of Sweden consisting of a castle, an organic farm, and a sculpture park. Lin's work, "11 Minute Line", can be called an earth drawing.
It is a snake - like wall whose loops and curves meander through one of the fields, which is still used for grazing cattle.

Stellan Skarsgard has portrayed many memorable characters on the silver screen, from the tough-minded professor in "Good Will Hunting" to the haunted, paralyzed oil-rigger in Lars von Trier's award-winning "Breaking the Waves." Max von Sydow, Ingrid Bergman, possibly Dolph Lundgren and of course Garbo; A mere handful Scandinavian actors have made a comparable name for themselves in Hollywood. Skarsgard was one of the 'Stars of Stockholm' portrayed in our issue 8, photographed by Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin while filming in Rome.
